Music video case study - Late Night Talking Harry Styles

By analysing this video, I have discovered some ideas and conventions I would like to incorporate into my own. These include:
-the use of mise-en-scene to create a natural bedroom setting, for example the artist wearing pyjamas in certain shots and the use of bedding
-voyeuristic shots of the artist in bed in the middle of a room being watched by others, also a good way to include different social groups within the video
-big scene near the end with pillows and duvets being thrown around, although instead of a pillow fight mine would be more solo and emotional shots of the artist
-cyclical structure of final scenes ending up in the same place as opening sequence
-links to artist page at the end to create digital convergence between the video and website

Music video case study - Deja Vu Olivia Rodrigo

By analysing this video, I have discovered some ideas and conventions I would like to incorporate into my own. These include:
-shots taken through a mirror, as audiences almost feel like they are watching the artist from their own perspective and it can be a good way to convey emotions and facial expressions
-screens within screens and elements of voyeurism, especially having the artist watch themselves on screen as this has elements of postmodernism and creates a hyperreality
-intertextual references with posters or images as part of the mise-en-scene
-build up to one big intense, emotional scene which in which the visuals reflect the music and lyrics
-cyclical structure with final shots mirroring the opening sequence
-links to artist page at the end to create digital convergence with website and video

Industrial context - brand research

Warner Music Group are considered to be one of the three major players within the music industry, alongside Sony and Universal. It was founded in March 1958 in New York, originally to prevent any of Warner Bros' signed actors recording music for rival companies. Labels under WMG include Atlantic Records Group, Elektra Music Group, Rhino Entertainment, Warner Bros. Records and Parlophone Records. Their mission statement reads:

Warner Music Group is all about our people. We are one global company made up of the most knowledgeable, passionate, and creative people in our business.

It is the mission of every member of the WMG team around the world to create a nurturing environment for artists, songwriters, and fellow employees at every stage of their career. We strive to set WMG apart from the rest of the industry by embracing a philosophy of innovation that is part of our company’s DNA.

Some notable artists signed to WMG are: Charlie XCX, Ed Sheeran, Cardi B, Travis Scott, Beyoncé, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Raye.

WMG underwent a recent rebranding, aiming to unify the different aspects of their business together as one cohesive company. This included the phrase 'vision and voice' to summarise their brand identity, as well as a more vibrant colour palette and modernised logo. This helped to strengthen WMG's position as a next-generation music entertainment company, and honour the companies heritage while embracing a modern and playful spirit.
